SYNOPSIS
(Full Synopsis)
Set in early 19th-century Vienna, the musical unfolds during the later years of Ludwig van Beethoven’s life, as he faces the gradual loss of his hearing while continuing to pursue artistic greatness.
Beethoven, already celebrated as a brilliant composer and pianist, lives with deep emotional scars from his childhood and a profound distrust of love and human relationships. Despite public acclaim, he remains isolated, defining himself solely through his art.
His life begins to change when he meets Antonie Brentano, a noblewoman trapped in a loveless marriage. Through their encounter, Beethoven experiences a powerful emotional awakening, and the two form an intense and transformative bond. As they share their wounds and desires, Beethoven rediscovers both vulnerability and inspiration.
However, their relationship—kept secret due to social constraints—eventually comes to light. Faced with the potential destruction of her family and social standing, Antonie chooses to leave Beethoven.
Devastated by the loss and confronted with his worsening deafness, Beethoven descends into despair. Yet through suffering, he ultimately reaffirms his artistic identity, transforming pain into music that transcends human limitations.
제작 노트
The musical was produced by EMK Musical Company as its fifth original production, with global expansion in mind from the outset. Unlike previous EMK works composed by Frank Wildhorn, this production brought together renowned European creators Michael Kunze and Sylvester Levay, known for Elisabeth, Mozart!, and Rebecca.
Developed over approximately seven years, the work is inspired by Beethoven’s “Immortal Beloved” letter and reimagines his relationship with Antonie Brentano as the emotional core of the narrative. Directed jointly by Wang Yong-beom and Gil Mehmert, the production combines large-scale staging with arrangements of Beethoven’s original compositions, adapting classical works into musical theatre form.
From its early stages, the production was designed for international markets, and overseas productions were planned alongside its Korean premiere.
