SYNOPSIS
(Partial Synopsis)
Set in 1930s Gyeongseong during the Japanese colonial period, the musical unfolds as a group of young artists attempt to stage an opera under increasing censorship and political pressure.
Members of a literary society seek ways to evade surveillance while continuing their resistance activities. In an unexpected turn, they decide to produce an Italian-style opera titled I Sognatori (“The Dreamers”), believing that its story of resistance can inspire Korean audiences.
At the center of the story is Yun I-seon, a medical student who discovers his extraordinary talent as a tenor. Alongside him are Seo Jin-yeon, a determined leader and director of the production, and Lee Su-han, a passionate independence activist and stage designer.
As the project develops, their artistic ambition becomes intertwined with political risk. The production of the opera evolves into both a personal journey and a collective act of resistance, raising the question of whether their “first Korean opera” can be realized under the constraints of their time.
제작 노트
The musical was created by the composer-lyricist duo Will Aronson and Park Chun-hyu, known for their previous collaborations, and developed over multiple iterations beginning with a reading presented at the Wooran Foundation in 2018. The production was later expanded and fully staged by OD Company in 2023.
Inspired by the real-life tenor Lee In-sun (1907–1960), a pioneer of Korean opera, the work transforms historical material into a fictional narrative. Drawing on operatic traditions, the score incorporates classical influences while maintaining a contemporary musical theatre structure, featuring recurring motifs and large-scale orchestration.
The production also employs a dual structure, combining a frame narrative of recollection with a play-within-a-play format, as the characters rehearse and stage the opera I Sognatori within the musical itself.
