SYNOPSIS

(Partial Synopsis)

Set in a near-future society around 2035, the musical unfolds in Korea, where a discarded humanoid jockey robot, a racehorse facing euthanasia, and a struggling family confront questions of survival, dignity, and emotional connection.

After falling during a race, a humanoid robot jockey is severely damaged and faces disposal. A teenage girl with an interest in robotics purchases and repairs the robot, naming it Collie. As Collie gradually integrates into her family, consisting of a mother burdened by grief and responsibility and an older sister with limited mobility, subtle emotional changes begin to emerge.

Meanwhile, the racehorse that Collie once rode is scheduled for euthanasia after failing to meet performance expectations. Recognizing the horse’s suffering, the family becomes determined to save it. Through their efforts, Collie begins to understand emotions beyond its programmed capacity, while the family members slowly reconnect with one another.

The story follows their attempt to reclaim meaning in a world driven by efficiency and speed, ultimately presenting a quiet resistance through empathy, patience, and the pursuit of happiness at one’s own pace.

제작 노트

A Thousand Blues is based on the bestselling science fiction novel by Cheon Seon-ran. Produced by Seoul Performing Arts Company, the musical adapts the original narrative into a large-scale stage work combining ensemble choreography, puppetry, and LED-based staging. Instead of using real robotics, the production employs theatrical imagination to represent humanoid characters, emphasizing emotional storytelling over technological realism. The work highlights themes of humanism, marginalization, and interspecies empathy, expanding the novel’s narrative through musical and visual language.
