SYNOPSIS
(Full Synopsis)
Set in the Joseon Dynasty on Jeju Island, the musical unfolds around a conflict between rigid moral virtue and human desire, as a subordinate government official struggles to uphold his chastity.
Baebijang, a lower-ranking aide accompanying the newly appointed governor, prides himself on maintaining strict fidelity to his late wife’s wishes, avoiding all contact with women. In contrast, the governor and other officials, amused by his rigid morality, plot to test his resolve. They enlist Aeryang, a beautiful and clever courtesan, to seduce him.
Initially confident in his virtue, Baebijang mocks others who succumb to desire. However, after encountering Aeryang—especially when he secretly observes her bathing—he becomes captivated by her beauty. Despite inner conflict and even visions of his deceased wife warning him, he gradually gives in to his feelings.
As his obsession deepens, Baebijang sends love letters and eventually visits Aeryang, becoming the subject of ridicule. In the end, Aeryang exposes his hypocrisy by stripping away his dignity, revealing the gap between his moral claims and his actions.
제작 노트
Premiered in 1966 by Yegrin Musical Company, Sweet, Come to Me Stealthily is considered the first Korean original musical. It was created by playwright Kim Young-soo and composer Choi Chang-kwon, adapting the classical novel Baebijang-jeon. The production combined Western orchestral music with Korean melodic elements and choreography influenced by ballet, marking a significant innovation in Korean performing arts. Its success demonstrated the viability of Korean-style musical theatre and led to the designation of October 26 (its premiere date) as “Musical Day” in Korea. The work has since been revived multiple times, including a major remake in 2013.
