SYNOPSIS
(Full Synopsis)
Set in the Joseon Dynasty, the musical unfolds across Namwon and surrounding regions, where the love between Chun-hyang, the daughter of a courtesan, and Mongryong, a nobleman’s son, is tested by rigid social hierarchy and political corruption.
Chun-hyang and Mongryong meet and fall in love, forming a bond that transcends class divisions. However, Mongryong must leave for the capital, promising to return. During his absence, the corrupt magistrate Byeon Hak-do arrives and attempts to force Chun-hyang into submission. She refuses, remaining loyal to Mongryong, and is imprisoned and subjected to punishment.
In reinterpretations of the musical, psychological and modern narrative devices are introduced, including dream sequences and altered motivations for character encounters. These reinterpretations explore Chun-hyang’s inner conflict and emotional tension between loyalty, desire, and survival.
Mongryong later returns in disguise as a secret royal inspector, exposing the corruption and rescuing Chun-hyang. The story concludes with justice restored and their reunion, affirming themes of fidelity, resistance, and moral integrity.
제작 노트
Originally staged under the title "대춘향전" in 1968 by the Yegrin Musical Company at Seoul Citizen's Hall, this work is considered one of the earliest large-scale attempts to adapt a Korean classical narrative into a modern musical format. The production combined elements of Western musical theatre with Korean traditional performance practices, including dance, choral singing, and orchestral accompaniment.
Following the institutional reorganization of performing arts groups in Korea, Yegrin was later incorporated into the National Dance Company, and the work was restaged in 1974 at the National Theater of Korea. This revival maintained the original creative team’s core structure while further refining staging, choreography, and musical composition within a more formalized national production system.
Beginning with the 1986 production at the Sejong Center for the Performing Arts, the work was retitled "성춘향," reflecting a shift toward clearer character-centered naming conventions and broader audience accessibility. This version was presented as a large-scale collaborative production involving multiple resident companies, including dance, choir, and orchestral ensembles.
Subsequent revivals, including the 1994 National Theater production by the Seoul Performing Arts Company and later performances in 2002, demonstrate the work’s continued adaptation across different institutional frameworks, preserving its hybrid structure of traditional Korean storytelling and musical theatre conventions.
Note: This work is distinct from the traditional pansori "대춘향전." Some overseas performances under the title "대춘향전" refer to pansori-based productions rather than this musical, and careful distinction is required in archival classification.
