SYNOPSIS
(Partial Synopsis)
Set in seventh-century Silla, the musical unfolds amid war, court intrigue, and religious conflict, where the monk Wonhyo seeks truth and reconciliation while confronting love, power, and public misunderstanding.
The story follows Wonhyo, a charismatic monk admired by commoners for his unconventional sermons and spiritual brilliance. Princess Yoseok falls in love with him, while the pro-Tang noble Dae-to resents and opposes him. As political tension grows and Silla faces pressure from Tang, Queen Jindeok urges Wonhyo and Uisang to travel to Tang in order to interpret the Geumgang Sammaegyeong, a task no one else can solve. Leaving behind Yoseok’s desperate confession of love, Wonhyo begins the journey.
During the trip, Wonhyo spends the night in a cave and undergoes a transformative spiritual experience. After drinking water from what he later realizes is a skull, he achieves a profound awakening and abandons the journey to Tang. Returning to Silla, he wanders through marketplaces and lowly places, using song, dance, and direct contact with ordinary people to spread a message of hope and insight. He accepts his fated love with Princess Yoseok and chooses to break formally from monastic status.
As criticism intensifies, Wonhyo is further endangered by Dae-to’s schemes and is falsely accused of involvement in the assassination of King Muyeol. The musical presents his life as a conflict between institutional power and a broader vision of compassion, communication, and hwajaeng, or reconciliation beyond division.
제작 노트
Wonhyo was created as a major commercial historical musical centered on the Silla monk Wonhyo, with the stated aim of bringing Buddhist thought to wider audiences. It was jointly presented by the Jogye Order and MBC, produced by BBS Buddhist Broadcasting, MBC, and MMCT, and mounted as part of MBC’s 50th anniversary programming.
The script, reportedly revised around thirty times over more than a year and supervised by novelist Lee Mun-yol, focused on three major elements from Wonhyo’s life: the skull-water enlightenment episode, his relationship with Princess Yoseok, and his philosophy of hwajaeng. The production emphasized accessibility for non-Buddhist audiences by combining religious themes with romance, spectacle, humor, and political drama.
MMCT employed large-scale digital stage technology to recreate Hwangnyongsa Temple, Seokguram, cave scenes, palace settings, and entertainment districts. The show was promoted as a high-tech musical, with choreography by Lee Ran-young and music by Kim Hyun-bo. The 2011 encore run at the National Theater introduced new cast members and additional lift-based stage effects.
