Summary
Through DBT, Kiki learns to manage intense emotions and live with them, while five hosts use multiple roles, rap, and humor to give the serious subject theatrical energy.
Origin & Development
The work approaches borderline personality disorder through lived experience and dialectical behavior therapy rather than treating it only as dramatic metaphor. Five hosts take multiple roles, using rap and humor to sustain theatrical energy. The piece premiered in Seoul in 2024 at CKL Stage, quickly drawing attention for its unusual subject matter and accessible storytelling. Writer-director Yoonji Jo describes the show as not only about personality disorders but also about universal feelings of emptiness, anxiety, and fear of abandonment that modern people share, regardless of nationality or background.
The musical was selected for K-Musical International Market 2024, which positioned it to be introduced to overseas producers and investors. Its subject — BPD — has contemporary resonance in the English-speaking world, where similar works often treat mental health themes as tragic or overly heavy. The performance unfolds as a hybrid diary and talk-concert, where Kiki candidly addresses her struggles with emotional instability, fear of abandonment, and impulsive behavior. Music and staging soften the heavy themes, allowing the audience to laugh, reflect, and empathize in equal measure. The result is a production that feels therapeutic while remaining theatrical.
Korean reviewers and international observers alike commented on the work’s high level of completion despite its newness. A UK industry voice highlighted how Kiki offered a refreshing alternative to the overly tragic portrayals of personality disorders in British theatre. The musical was regarded as highly adaptable for Western audiences, thanks to its universal themes and its approachable, candid tone. Though only recently premiered, Kiki’s Borderline Personality Disorder Diary has already moved beyond Korea, joining the international conversation on mental health through musical theatre.
Its London showcase in 2024 marked its first step abroad and demonstrated the growing role of the K-Musical Market and Roadshow programs in exporting Korean works. By tackling difficult subjects with music and humor, Kiki positions itself as both a comfort and a cultural bridge.
Full Synopsis
Kiki appears as a guest on a talk show and introduces themselves as someone living with borderline personality disorder. Five hosts reenact episodes from Kiki’s life, portraying every other person in the story. Kiki describes the condition as living without protective skin around the mind, so that even a minor stimulus can become overwhelming.
Fear of abandonment repeatedly destabilizes Kiki’s relationships. When a partner travels with an ex, Kiki’s suspicions escalate until they impulsively end the relationship and immediately regret it. Similar emotional crises lead to self-harm, suicide attempts, drug use, repeated hospitalization, and an inability to remain employed.
After another crisis, Kiki meets psychiatrist Ethan and begins Dialectical Behavior Therapy. Through mindfulness, distress tolerance, and emotion regulation, Kiki learns to observe emotions without acting on them immediately. Holding ice becomes one practical method of surviving moments when self-harm feels unavoidable.
Ethan helps Kiki find a job and practise setting boundaries instead of running away whenever a mistake occurs. Kiki also meets Bennett through a dating app. Bennett accepts the diagnosis, and the two resist rushing into the relationship. When jealousy later triggers another crisis, Kiki calls Ethan rather than harming themselves and separates what actually happened from what fear has imagined.
Treatment also forces Kiki to confront childhood sexual abuse and the silence surrounding it. After completing the program, Kiki joins a support group and explains that people with the disorder need their pain acknowledged rather than dismissed.
Kiki’s father still believes the condition can be overcome through willpower and initially refuses even to name it. During family therapy, he admits that he avoided his child’s suffering because he could not endure it himself. He finally says “borderline personality disorder” aloud and apologizes.
Returning to the talk show, Kiki reveals that they have remained with Bennett and at the same job for five years. The condition has not simply disappeared, but Kiki has learned how to live with emotions without allowing each crisis to determine what happens next.
