Summary

A 32-year-old man with the intellectual capacity of a seven-year-old becomes a genius after brain surgery, then faces losing his intelligence as he discovers what true happiness means.

Origin & Development

The musical was created by Papa Production and later co-produced with SHOWNOTE. It is based on Daniel Keyes’ 1959 novel Flowers for Algernon and was first staged at the NEMO Theater (formerly Sadari Arts Center) in Seoul in January 2006. Composer Jang So-young and lyricist Chun Woo-yeon developed the adaptation, which ran across multiple seasons until late 2007, followed by a large-scale revival in 2017 at Dongsoong Art Center. The story centers on a man with intellectual disabilities who undergoes an experimental operation to raise his intelligence, exploring themes of human dignity, emotional memory, and the limits of scientific ambition.

Partial Synopsis

Inho, a 32-year-old man with the intelligence of a child, becomes a genius after experimental brain surgery. As his abilities rise and then begin to fade, he confronts love, prejudice, and the meaning of happiness.

Produced by Good Show Company, with direction and translation by Lee Hyun-kyu, the adaptation featured a new script and score for Chinese audiences while keeping the core premise of the Korean musical. It drew attention for localizing Charlie Gordon's psychological arc and positioning the work in China's growing market for literary, emotion-driven musicals.
