Summary
A Korean original five-actor chamber musical that distills Dostoevsky’s novel into an intense funeral–courtroom tableau for father Fyodor and sons Dmitri, Ivan, Alyosha, and Smerdyakov.
Origin & Development
2018, lyrics by Kim Kyeong-ju and music by Lee Jin-wook, premiered at Soo Hyun Jae Theatre (now YES24 Stage 3) produced by SuyuNjae Company; later produced by Orchard Musical Company. Developed through showcases in 2017, the staging compresses the novel’s scope into a ritual space that shifts between chapel, crypt, and courtroom. 2018 – Premiere, Soo Hyun Jae Company, Soo Hyun Jae Theatre (now YES24 Stage 3). The musical has recurred in subsequent revivals with updated casts and design.
Full Synopsis
Fyodor Karamazov has been murdered, and suspicion falls on his eldest son, Dmitri. Dmitri openly admits that he hated his father and frequently imagined killing him, but insists that he did not commit the crime. His violent temper, financial conflict with Fyodor, and relationship with Grushenka make his denial difficult for others to believe.
Alyosha refuses to accept that Dmitri is a murderer, while Ivan is consumed by his own hatred of their father and by questions about God, freedom, and human suffering. In conversations with Alyosha, Ivan argues that a world permitting the suffering of innocent children cannot be morally justified and questions whether humanity can bear the freedom offered by faith.
Smerdyakov, Fyodor’s servant and illegitimate son, has memorized Ivan’s arguments and treats them as instructions. He eventually confesses to Ivan that he murdered Fyodor, faked an epileptic seizure, and manipulated events so that Dmitri would appear guilty. Smerdyakov claims that Ivan’s belief that moral boundaries disappear without God gave him permission to act. He simultaneously seeks Ivan’s approval and holds him responsible for the crime.
Unable to separate his ideas from their consequences, Ivan begins to collapse psychologically. Smerdyakov later takes his own life, leaving Ivan without the witness who could prove Dmitri’s innocence.
Ivan appears in court and desperately declares that he shares responsibility for the murder, but his confession is dismissed as madness. Dmitri again insists that he did not kill Fyodor, yet acknowledges the hatred, violence, and recklessness within himself. Although innocent of the physical act, he accepts his moral guilt and expresses remorse for the life he has led.
Alyosha, shaken by the destruction of his family, rejects passive submission and turns toward direct engagement with human suffering. The brothers are left to confront different forms of responsibility for a murder committed by one man but enabled by the hatred, ideas, and silence surrounding them.
