SYNOPSIS
(Full Synopsis)
Set in ancient Baekje, the musical unfolds between the royal court and the secluded land of Dowon, where political power and personal desire collide.
King Yeogyeong, suffering from chronic insomnia, dreams of a mysterious woman who brings him peace. Refusing political pressure to choose a queen, he orders his general Hyang-sil to find the woman from his dream. She is discovered to be Arang, the wife of Domi, leader of the marginalized Mokji people living in isolation.
Under the pretense of protecting his people, Domi is drawn into the capital, where a rigged game of Go becomes a political trap. Yeogyeong claims victory and takes Arang to the palace, while Domi is imprisoned and ultimately blinded and cast adrift.
As preparations for a forced royal marriage proceed, Arang escapes during a moment of chaos and returns to Dowon, believing Domi to be dead. She mourns him and scars her own face, rejecting the identity imposed upon her. Domi survives, and the two are eventually reunited.
Driven by obsession, Yeogyeong pursues them, only to confront the collapse of his illusion when Arang reveals her altered face. As external forces bring about the fall of the kingdom, the king meets his end, defeated not by war but by his own desire.
Arang and Domi depart together, suggesting that paradise is not a place to be found, but something created through shared endurance and choice.
제작 노트
Arang is produced by ACOM and directed by Yoon Ho-jin, representing a newly constructed work that retains the original creative leadership while introducing a completely new book, score, and staging. The 2026 production emphasizes Korean aesthetics, integrating traditional instruments, pansori-inspired vocal techniques, and a visual language influenced by ink painting and symbolic space.
Rather than adopting the large-scale historical realism associated with earlier works by the same production team, this version shifts toward abstraction and minimalism, focusing on psychological states and symbolic time.
The work is based on Choi In-ho’s novella 몽유도원도, itself inspired by the historical “The Tale of Mrs. Domi” recorded in Samguk Sagi.
The original version premiered in 2002 under the title 몽유도원도 at Seoul Arts Center. While sharing its narrative foundation, the 2026 version is structurally and musically distinct and is therefore treated as a newly re-created musical under contemporary classification standards.
